Tell Marion County to defend Oregon's Sanctuary Law
Oregon passed its Sanctuary Law nearly 40 years ago after then Legislator Rocky Barilla received complaints from constituents who were being racially profiled by local law enforcement. The legislature passed the law with strong support from Republicans and Democrats.
Voters overwhelmingly supported it again on the ballot in 2018.
Oregonians understand that unfairly profiling people based on the color of their skin, their accent, or their perceived immigration status is wrong and makes all of us less safe.
For nearly four decades, Oregon's law enforcement professionals have honored and championed our Sanctuary Law because they understand that trust is the foundation of good policing, and when police play the role of federal immigration agents, many families will be too afraid to call them.
Despite decades of evidence, Marion County's Commission is suing the state to challenge our Sanctuary Law, suggesting that they don't know how to implement it correctly. Tell Marion County Commissioners to stand up to federal overreach and drop this wasteful lawsuit now.
